Avon (New York, New York) Skin-So-Soft bath oil received considerable media attention several
years ago when some consumers reported it to be effective as a mosquito repellent. When
tested under laboratory conditions against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, this product's effective
half-life was 30 minutes. Against Aedes albopictus, Skin-So-Soft oil provided 40 minutes of
protection from bites, a duration 10 times less than that of 12.5% DEET [46]. It has been
proposed that the limited mosquito repellent effect of Skin-So-Soft oil could be caused by its
fragrance or the presence of diisopropyl adipate and benzophenone in the formulation, both of
which have some repellent activity.
Products that rely on fragrance to repel mosquitoes show considerable promise and have been
under intense investigation since the Avon product, Skin-So-Soft showed proven mosquito
repellent properties. Predacious fish feed on the immature stages of mosquitoes and are
extremely efficient in terms of control. In salt marsh areas, native killifish can be managed to
eliminate mosquitoes from some types of marshland. In upland areas, pond-raised mosquito
fish can be stocked to eliminate mosquitoes. Electronic repellers, bug zappers, and
mosquito-fighting plants represent hoaxes that are marketed solely for economic gain. The
American consumer, should be aware that these products have little value for mosquito control.
When Avon Skin-So-Soft lotion first came on the market, housewives in the know quickly recognized a fringe benefit: The lotion's perfuming agent, called coumarin, also wards off
mosquitoes. As Skin-So-Soft's "underground" reputation grew, Avon developed its Bug Guard Plus formula. The new recipe relies on IR3535, a water-resistant coumarin compound
that, unlike DEET, doesn't have to be washed off after use.
Testers were initially pleased with Avon's results; the odorless spray has a cooling effect with no greasy residue, and Skin-So-Soft boasts an SPF of 15, additional vitamin E, and a
water-resistant formula. But within an hour (Avon promises four-hour protection), bites welled up on arms and feet. And after repeated applications, the aerosol sprayer went on strike,
squirting tiny bits of gummed-up mosquito repellent. Nonetheless, a few testers remained impressed with Skin-So-Soft's scentless, sunscreen-boosted formula, and vowed to buy
their own can, despite the need for repeated application.
